How to apply

To apply to UBC School of Music's graduate programs, you must apply to UBC via the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Complete the online application form and make sure to confirm any additional audition and application requirements for the program you're applying to.

Music graduate degrees have detailed application and audition requirements. A degree-by-degree breakdown is available below.

If you're applying to a performance program, you must audition as part of your application. Please check below for degree-specific audition and document requirements, which may include a pre-screening deadline and instrument-specific video recording requirements.

Domestic applicants are expected to audition in-person for the MMus program. if distance, accessibility considerations, or extenuating circumstances impact your ability to attend an audition in-person at UBC, please contact the graduate programs assistant at music.gradadmissions@ubc.ca in advance for permission to send a recording.

In-person auditions

January 11-12, 2025

Applicants will be contacted by graduate program staff in mid-December with the date and time of their audition. Please do not make travel arrangements until you have been given a confirmed audition date and time.

Video audition

Deadline: January 3, 2025
Pre-screening deadline (for Piano & Conducting applicants only): December 15, 2024

Instructions for uploading audition materials into UBC’s video audition software (CLAS) will be emailed to those with a pre-screen requirement, or who have permission to audition via video. If you have not received upload instructions by December 10, please email admissions staff at music.gradadmissions@ubc.ca.

Video audition guidelines:

  • If you choose to submit a video audition, faculty may request the opportunity for a live video interview and/or further audition materials at their discretion.
  • You may submit high-quality video recordings of your audition selections, preferably recorded by a professional technician.
  • The recording of each individual selection (piece, multi-movement work, or song) must be an unedited performance that has been recorded within the past 6 months.
  • Each recorded selection must not be edited or manipulated in any way, and you must submit a statement certifying the integrity of each recording.

Collaborative pianist

A pianist is not required for any except voice auditions. A collaborative pianist is scheduled for all voice auditions at no charge, although voice and opera applicants may also bring a pianist of their choice to the audition. Please contact music.gradadmissions@ubc.ca with any questions.

There are a number of scholarships and awards available for incoming graduate students.

After finishing your application you will receive an email with your individual audition date and time. Audition dates are in January, and most applicants receive their individual audition dates and times by mid-December. Be sure to check your email regularly, as we'll be in touch about any additional application materials and next steps.

Diagnostic Examination for DMA Applicants in Orchestral Instrumental Performance, Keyboard, and Voice.

Applicants are invited to do in-person or online auditions after applying for the DMA program. All DMA applicants are required to take a two-part diagnostic examination during in-person or online auditions.

Option 1: Candidates attending in-person auditions may choose to take the exam on the same day as their audition.

Option 2: The diagnostic exam can be taken remotely two weeks after the audition and only the candidates who pass the audition will be required to take the diagnostic exam. The questions will be sent on Monday, January 27, 2025, and candidates will have 24 hours to complete and return the exam.

Diagnostic Examination: Music History

For the music history section of the exam, applicants will write a brief essay (500-1000 words) on a composer or genre. The essay will involve discussing important historical developments and works related to the composer or genre. To prepare for the essay, applicants can consult music history textbooks, particularly A History of Western Music (W.W. Norton) or the Oxford History of Western Music.

Diagnostic Examination: Music Theory

For the theory portion of the exam, applicants will be asked to create a reduction of an excerpt from a multi-voiced common-practice piece of music, and to provide a Roman numeral analysis for the chords that have harmonic function. Applicants will also be asked to answer analytical questions on a short post-tonal piece. To prepare for the music theory of the examination, applicants may consult any modern theory textbook, such as Burstein & Straus's A Concise Introduction to Tonal Harmony or Laitz and Callahan The Complete Musician for the tonal question, and Straus’s Introduction to Post-Tonal Theory or Kostka’s Materials and Techniques of Twentieth Century Music for the post-tonal question.

Applicants who pass the audition will proceed to the second round of the DMA admissions process, which is a 30-minute interview on Zoom. During this interview, applicants will answer questions about their knowledge of music history and music history and, more generally, their research interests. Applicants will be assessed on the likelihood of their advancement to doctoral candidacy 36 months after they begin the DMA program at UBC.

Below is a sample interview for your reference.
