General Studies

The Bachelor of Music in general studies provides a broad, flexible, general higher education in music, and includes private lessons on the instrument you play the best.

The Bachelor of Music in General Studies gives you the freedom to choose many elective courses, allowing continuation into various professional options, including graduate degrees.

Once you are admitted to general studies, you may freely move between the general studies in music major (GMUS), the general studies: elementary education (GSEM) major and the general studies: secondary education (GSSM) major.

Most students in the Bachelor of Music program are registered in general studies.

Transferring to other Bachelor of Music majors

General studies majors may transfer to other Bachelor of Music majors. To do this, GMUS majors may:

  • Audition for transfer to an performance major at the end of both first and second year, with permission of the division;
  • Apply for transfer to the composition major at the end of the first and second year (preferably having taken MUSC 107C); or,
  • Apply for transfer to the music scholarship major at the end of the second year.
