Applied to the BMUS program? Here’s an update on the process

By Katherine Evans, Admissions Manager

By now, you have probably submitted your general application to UBC and chosen “BMUS” as one of your choices of degree program. You’ve also submitted and paid for the Supplementary Audition Form and sent a 2021 Reference Form to your two references for them to submit on your behalf.

As many of you know, we were hoping to be able to offer some in-person auditions this year, but because of the ongoing restrictions, all auditions will take place via video recording this year. The upload deadline was March 1, 2021; if you have a late submission, please email me for instructions.

If you are applying for the Composition major, you have probably already uploaded PDFs of your original scores and video/audio of the corresponding recordings. Please remember that you must also submit an instrumental/vocal audition video to the link corresponding to that instrument.

Haven’t received directions to upload your audition video? Having issues of any kind about the audition process? Let us know! We’re looking forward to hearing your audition video and getting to know you through your application materials and essay. If faculty have a specific question for you after viewing your materials, they may reach out to you directly using the email address you provided on your application.

Now, take a moment to sit back — well done! Congratulations on completing your audition video and sorting through the lengthy application process. You can finally pause and take a moment to imagine what your life might be like as a UBC Music student. We are very proud of the music our students have made this year, both virtually and in the context of our strict in-person safety protocols, and we have so much hope for the coming year!

We wish we had more definitive answers for you about what in-person coursework and safety protocols will be available to students in September, but some things remain the same: You will decide to come to UBC Music because you love music, love playing your instrument, and are excited to explore the incredible academic resources of an amazing institution! You will spend lots of time in the Music Building, Roy Barnett Recital Hall, Old Auditorium, and the Chan Centre, visit the AMS Student Nest, and learn — virtually, for now — from the Music, Art, and Architecture Library in the Barber Learning Centre.
