Hamilton Lau wins first prize at the Robert and Ellen Silverman Piano Concerto Competition at UBC

Congratulations to MMus student Hamilton Lau for winning First Prize at the Robert and Ellen Silverman Piano Concerto Competition Gala Performance on Saturday, September 28, for his performance of Beethoven’s Concerto No.5 in E-flat Major Op.73. Hamilton had also just finished winning First Prize and the Adjudicator’s Special Prize at the BCRMTA Provincial Competition in Abbotsford on September 14.

We would also like to congratulate second place winner, MMus student Daniel Tong who performed Beethoven’s Concerto No.4 in G Major Op.58 and third place winner, BMus student Lucy Moon who performed Felix Mendelssohn’s Concerto No.1 in G Minor Op.25, for their beautiful and inspired performances.

The UBC School of Music would like to thank Robert and Ellen Silverman for the creation and implementation of this event. This wonderful opportunity for our students would not be possible without their continued support.

We would also like to thank Chair of the Keyboard Division, Mark Anderson; Director of Orchestras, Jonathan Girard and Acting Director, UBC School of Music, Hedy Law. A special thank you to jury members Jacques Lacombe and Craig Sheppard for their sound judgement.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our students and to everyone who worked so hard to put this competition together. It was a lovely evening celebrating piano music.

Stay tuned to our website and socials for more about last night’s event including clips from these gorgeous performances!

About the competition

The Robert and Ellen Silverman Piano Concerto Competition at UBC bring together the University of British Columbia School of Music’s young piano students for an evening of gorgeous and challenging music.

The competition was designed to give students opportunities to perform with the UBC Chamber Orchestra in a high-profile public concert.
“Professionally, if any pianist is going to ‘make it,’ playing a concerto and knowing how to do it is very important. There are only so many opportunities to play with the orchestra,” says Professor Emeritus Robert Silverman of his decision to create the competition. “Ellen and I thought, what can we do that would be good for the students and a good feature for the School?”
