Jack Campbell (He/Him/His)

BMus 2024, Violin Performance

Is there anyone who you would like to give a shout-out to?

My professor and mentor, Jasper Wood. One of my all-time favourite violinists, Jasper has provided me with infinite support, needed encouragement, invaluable advice, and completely transformed and advanced the nature of how I approach music and the violin. He understands how music, violinists, music education, and musical production need to evolve to be efficient, multi-faceted, innovative, and look toward the future, while also maintaining the standards and traditions of history. On top of that, he is one of the most inspiring people you will meet, and the nicest guy on the planet!

What is a favourite memory from your time at UBC Music?

Arriving, occupying, working-in, and leaving the building each day with an equal sense of opportunity, inspiration, and excitement.

Any advice for incoming students?

If you work as hard as you can and never give up, it will pay off!

“It’s exciting to be moving onto the next chapter of my life as a music teacher, but I will never forget all of the wonderful memories and beautiful music I was able to make at UBC.”

Who has made an impact on your time here?

My undergraduate degree at the School of Music will always hold a special place in my heart. I want to especially thank my voice teacher, Professor Dale Throness, my friends, whose support means everything to me, and all of the incredibly talented musicians I’ve gotten to work with.

It’s exciting to be moving onto the next chapter of my life as a music teacher, but I will never forget all of the wonderful memories and beautiful music I was able to make at UBC.

“Let your favourite parts of your studies occupy the majority of your mental capacity - obsess over the things that spark joy! As much as possible, focus on what inspires you, and the roadblocks and hiccups will be less intense.”
(MMus 2024, Wind Band Conducting)

Maggie Whiteman (She/Her/Hers)

MMus 2024, Wind Band Conducting

Is there anyone who you would like to give a shout-out to?

Fellow UBC Music student, Brett Lacroix has been a rock, a staple, and one of the most emotionally intelligent musicians I have ever met. Thank you for the hours of insightful debriefs, wrapped in laughter!

What would you like to share with incoming students?

Let your favourite parts of your studies occupy the majority of your mental capacity—obsess over the things that spark joy! As much as possible, focus on what inspires you, and the roadblocks and hiccups will be less intense.

There will always be bumps—choose to see joy.

What is your favourite memory at UBC Music?

Hosting Shruti Ramani for the Symphonic Wind Ensemble’s Fall 2023 concert, “Tarot”, was such an inspiring and eye-opening experience.

They single handedly created an environment that made ragas and Indian classical music feel accessible while expanding our awareness of what “virtuosity” really means. They were incredible!

Adriana Zaharijevic (She/Her/Hers)

BMus 2024, Opera Performance

Who would you like to give a shout-out to?

Shout-out to my UBC Opera crew and Dr. Hedy Law, our opera history professor! To my talented peers, thanks for the unforgettable performances and friendships we formed. To Dr. Law, your inspiring lectures and support have enriched our learning journey!

Any advice for incoming students?

For incoming students, my advice is simple: welcome new experiences. Explore diverse clubs, subjects, and activities to discover what truly interests you. Forge genuine connections with peers, professors, and mentors—they’ll enrich your university experience.

Also, don’t forget to make time for hobbies, socializing, and exploring interests outside the classroom.

What is one of your favourite memories at UBC Music?

Stepping into Dorothee’s shoes in Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon is my favourite memory at UBC Opera as it holds deep significance in my heart. A transformative experience, sharing the stage with my dear friends added a special connection to our performances. The energy and dedication of the entire cast and crew made the production unforgettable, leaving me with lasting memories of my time with UBC Opera.
