Gloria Wong is an ethnomusicologist and Chinese music specialist. She has worked in many roles to promote Chinese instrumental music in Vancouver, including teacher, scholar, conductor, arranger and administrator. From 2012 to 2020, she served as the Artistic Director of the British Columbia Youth Chinese Orchestra. She was the founding Chair of the Chinese Music Program at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music, established in 2016. She served at the VSO School of Music as World Music Department Head and has worked to expand program offerings within world music (2017-19). Wong is also a passionate pedagogue of intercultural music and served as the Principal of the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra Summer Academy of 2019.

Wong’s dissertation research examined the shan’ge (courtship and dialogue songs) of the Hani minority in Yunnan, Southwest China. Her publications include the monograph, Yueqi: Chinese Musical Instruments in Performance (British Columbia Chinese Music Association, 2011), co-authored with Professor Emeritus Alan Thrasher. She also contributed Chinese instrument articles to the second edition of the Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments (Oxford, 2014). Her most current research focuses on contemporary compositions for Chinese chamber ensembles. She is currently the director of the UBC Chinese Music Ensemble.
