We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Acting Director and Associate Professor Hedy Law as Director of the UBC School of Music effective July 1, 2025.
“I am delighted that Dr. Law will take on the leadership of the School of Music. I take this opportunity to express my appreciation of Dr. Law’s work over the past year and the dedication she has shown thus far in her leadership of the School. Dr. Law’s impressive vision for the future of the School of Music will make her a tremendous asset to our students.”
Over the past year, Dr. Law has served as Acting Director while continuing her appointment as Associate Professor of Musicology in the UBC School of Music. Her interdisciplinary research spans a wide range of topics, including eighteenth-century French spectacles—such as opera, ballet, and pantomime—the cultural and intellectual currents of the French Enlightenment, and questions of gender and performance.
“I am deeply honoured to assume this leadership role for the UBC School of Music community. It is my joy to serve colleagues, students, staff, alumni, donors, collaborators, and community members, and I look forward to strengthening our diverse and vibrant community, advancing excellence in music scholarship, teaching, and learning, and fostering a School of Music where all can thrive,” said Dr. Hedy Law.
Dr. Law’s monograph, Music, Pantomime and Freedom in Enlightenment France, (Boydell 2020), examines the political and aesthetic dimensions of musical theatre in the late eighteenth century, offering new insights into the relationship between music, movement, and ideas of liberty in pre-Revolutionary France.

In addition to her work on European music and culture, Dr. Law’s scholarship also engages with Asian performance traditions, particularly Cantonese opera and music. Her current research explores the musical practices of Chinese immigrant communities in the Pacific Northwest, contributing to broader discourses in global music history and diaspora studies.
Dr. Law served as co-convenor of the American Musicological Society (AMA) Global Music History Study Group (2021-2024) and as chair of the AMA Fellowship Committee. At UBC, Dr. Law served as Graduate Advisor and Associate Director, Graduate (2022-2024) and is Chair of the Arts Curriculum Committee until July 2025.
