We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. David Fung as Associate Director, Graduate, UBC School of Music effective July 1, 2024.

I have treasured my time working alongside a world-class faculty and our brilliant students. I look forward to serving our communities in Vancouver with renewed passion in this new capacity.”
Currently the Associate Professor, Piano and Chamber Music, at the UBC School of Music, Dr. Fung is also curator at the Chan Center for Performing Arts, where he recently curated the Spirio Piano Series. He has also just accepted an appointment to the college faculty at the Manhattan School of Music.
Dr. Fung has previously taught piano and chamber music at Yale University and served as associate professor at the University of Georgia. He studied at the Hannover Hochschule für Musik, the Yale School of Music, and was the first piano graduate of the Colburn Conservatory. His teachers include Claude Frank, Peter Frankl, Margaret Hair, John Perry, and Arie Vardi.

As a recitalist and chamber musician, Dr. Fung is praised for his “ravishing and simply gorgeous” performances in the The Washington Post, and widely recognized for interpretations that are elegant and refined, yet intensely poetic and uncommonly expressive. With a repertoire of over sixty concertos, he regularly appears as soloist with the world’s premier orchestras.
With a deep interest in the visual arts and literature, resulting in a number of interdisciplinary collaborations, Dr. Fung has written on the intersection between the visual arts and music, most notably the exploration of the visual perspectives on the hidden variation in Morton Feldman’s late work.
At UBC, Dr. Fung will continue to teach piano in his studio while fulfilling his role as Associate Director, Graduate.
