Since the Summer of 1993, the UBC Summer Music Institute has been a haven where young musicians can spend part of the summer on the beautiful UBC campus focusing on intensely and creatively furthering their talent. The UBC Summer Vocal Workshop grew into its own program from the Summer Music Institute in 2013, and has since become one of the largest Summer programs in the country. Singers have the opportunity to interact with UBC School of Music Faculty, as well as professional Classical Musicians from all over the world.
WATCH: A look inside the workshop
Participants take part in Group Classes, Private Lessons, Coaching with Pianists, Masterclasses, Small Ensembles, Yoga, Movement Classes, Diction work, and a Final Concert. Singers of all levels of vocal training are invited to join the Voice and Opera Faculty for the UBC Vocal Workshop. It is a wonderful opportunity to work in classes and individually with teachers and professionals to develop better vocal focus, health, technique, and performance abilities.
Although the Vocal Workshop is still part of the UBC Summer Institute, the Vocal Workshop operates on its own under a different schedule and with different dates. This is to help accommodate the more individualized approach to the art of solo singing, and to allow for proper rest and recuperation for young voices. We are a smaller group and we aim to make the Program a more intimate and individual experience for each singer.
Although the UBC Vocal Workshop is primarily a Classically based program, we do encourage a range of musical interests. We teach Classical technique because it provides students with the healthiest approach to attempt any style of music.
Students are welcome to bring art song, legitimate musical theatre pieces, folk songs, opera arias, and any music they wish to learn how to perform better. We do not encourage people to bring pop music, as our Faculty is so experienced in the Classical style of Music.
Our past and present workshop singers have been accepted to such prestigious universities as The Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard, UBC, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Chapman, Loyola, McGill, University of Manitoba and San Francisco Conservatory and have gone on to perform at San Francisco Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera, Opera Victoria, Arizona Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, LA Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Opera, and many other venues throughout Europe and Asia.
We invite you to join us this summer for a enriching, challenging, and unforgettable two weeks.
