About
James Fankhauser (1939 – 2025) served as Professor of Voice and Choral Conducting at the School of Music from 1973 until his retirement in 2000. A deeply respected educator and conductor, he led the UBC University Singers for many years, guiding them to national and international acclaim. Under his direction, the University Singers achieved notable success, including winning the CBC National Radio Competition in 1994, which earned them a place in the BBC’s International Radio Competition. In 1995, they represented Canada at the Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition in Germany, where they were awarded First Prize, triumphing over excellent choirs from across Europe and Asia.
The University Singers have recorded three albums under Fankhauser, one including works by Bach, Bruckner with the other recordings featuring works by Chatman, Ramona Luengen, Raminsh, Watson Henderson, Weisgarber, Eugene Wilson and more. Recordings are available at the UBC Library (library.ubc.ca).
