Geronimo (Nimo) Mendoza

About

Whether performing La Boheme with the Vancouver Opera, Le Sacre du printemps with the Vancouver Symphony, collaborating with ethnical performers from various latitudes with the Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra, or exploring the most avant-garde trends with the Vancouver New Music ensemble, oboist Geronimo Mendoza can be found on stage collaborating with virtually every ensemble of the Canadian West Coast. A formerly member of the Mexico City Philharmonic, with which he toured Europe, Asia and North America, he now calls British Columbia his home.

Before leaving his native land, Mexico, he attended various international music festivals working with world-celebrated artists, such as John Mack, Ray Still, Alex Klein, Louis Pellerin, Isaac Durate, Ingo Goritzki, Christoph Lindemann, Charles “Chip” Hamann, Emanuel Abbuh and the London Winds. As a passionate educator, he has accumulated an extensive experience and has held teaching positions at the Escuela de Iniciacion a la Musica y la Danza and the Escuela de Musica Vida y Movimiento in Mexico City, and various institutions in Canada including the Vancouver Academy of Music and Langley Community Music School. He is a multi grant and award recipient of the BC Arts Council and the Mexico Arts Council as a professional solo-artist and chamber musician.

Mr. Mendoza is currently the Principal Oboe of the Vancouver Island Symphony and acting Oboe/English Horn with the Vancouver Symphony, and is a Faculty member of the University of British Columbia.
