Update (05/20/20): UBC has posted a number of resources for students as they prepare for the 2020-21 school year, including Quick Tips for Preparing to Learn Online, an update on what to expect from your September classes, and some (slightly older) information about housing.
Dear students,
By now you may have heard that for the fall term UBC will offer larger classes online, while some smaller classes may be conducted in-person, adhering to physical distancing and other safety guidance from B.C. Public Health.
What does this mean for Music students?
We recognize that face-to-face learning is an essential part of the BMus, MMus, and DMA programs, and important for the Bachelor of Arts in Music and other scholarly programs as well. With this in mind, School of Music faculty and staff are working hard to make sure that students have access to safe, high quality, face-to-face instruction where it is essential to their degree programs, and access to high-quality remote instruction where it is not.
At this point, we can guarantee that BMus, MMus, and DMA students will be able to receive much of their performance-based instruction in person, and that all students will be able to attend a wide range of academic courses online.
However, we also recognize that some students, particularly those whose degree requirements include courses that can only be delivered in person, may not feel safe returning to campus in September. We are exploring options that will allow you to continue to study this fall with as little disruption as possible.
All of which is to say that, during these extraordinary times, the School of Music is striving to make your arrival/return to UBC as seamless as possible. In the coming weeks we will be able to share detailed information for each program.
In the meantime, please do stay in touch! We’re here to answer your questions. And please send us your updates, too. If you haven’t already, check out the Dispatches from COVIDland blog, where you can read about and listen to the latest news and projects from students, faculty, and alumni.
Best,
Pat
