How would you describe your approach to teaching music? What do you enjoy the most about teaching?

What can students expect during their private lessons with you?

Engagement, support and enthusiasm for the music you want to make.

All the musical possibilities they provide.

Describe one of your most memorable performances (good or bad!).

So far, my most memorable performance was playing Duke Ellington’s “Heaven” for his sister Ruth on her brother’s piano in New York.

What is your favourite piece of music/composer/musician?

There are too many favourites for me to choose just one from each of these categories. To paraphrase Duke Ellington, “my favourite…is the music that I’m enjoying listening to right now…”

If you couldn’t play the trumpet or piano, what instrument would you like to play?

Either the clarinet or the saxophone. Two wonderful flexible and expressive instruments.

When you’re not practicing or teaching or performing, what are you most likely to be doing?

Reading (both fiction and non-fiction) and listening to more music (new and old).

For students thinking about the BMus program, what are your top three best reasons for studying music at UBC?

1) our diverse and talented faculty
2) our diverse and talented group of students
3) our wonderful library
