Introducing Dr. David Fung, Assistant Professor of Piano

The UBC School of Music is pleased to welcome Dr. David Fung, who is joining the faculty as Assistant Professor of Piano beginning January 1, 2022.

Praised for his “ravishing and simply gorgeous” performances in the The Washington Post, pianist David Fung is widely recognized for interpretations that are elegant and refined, yet intensely poetic and uncommonly expressive. Declared a Rising Star by BBC Music Magazine, Mr. Fung regularly appears with the world’s premier ensembles, as well as the major orchestras in his native country of Australia.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. David Fung as a member of our faculty. Already a fixture on the international stage, he is an outstanding artist who embraces a diverse range of repertoire,” says UBC School of Music Director T. Patrick Carrabré.

Mr. Fung taught piano and chamber music at Yale University, and has served as Artist-Faculty at many prestigious festivals and venues worldwide. He currently serves on the piano faculty at the University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music. Mr. Fung has two acclaimed albums: Transcendent Beethoven and Complete Mozart Piano Sonatas Vol. 1 on the Steinway and Sons Label, and can also be heard on more than a dozen accoladed releases by Pentatone, Orchid, Genuin, Yarlung, and Naxos.

“We at the UBC School of Music, and specifically the keyboard division, are very excited to welcome Dr. David Fung as our newest addition to the faculty,” says Prof. Mark Anderson, Chair of the Keyboard Division. “As an internationally acclaimed performer, recording artist and pedagogue, Dr. Fung is a highly regarded pianist with a history of success teaching both undergraduates and graduate students. We look forward to a very rewarding collaboration that is centered upon enriching student experiences while creating inter-collegial and community-based relationships that continues to distinguish UBC Music and the keyboard division as a world-class learning destination.”

Mr. Fung will be curating an exciting new performance series at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, the details of which will be announced at a later date.

“I’ve known of the UBC School of Music since I was a young musician,” says David. “Its storied past, illustrious faculty and talented students contributed to its international prominence as far reaching as Australia where I grew up. It is with great honour that I will be joining the faculty at UBC, and I’m looking forward to working with its esteemed colleagues, students, and communities. I’m also excited to explore Vancouver’s lush beauty and exceptional food scene!”

Welcome to UBC, David!
