These Indigenous artists are putting queer love in the spotlight

Derksen’s song Top Shelf, which she describes as a two-spirit love song, is one of her more personal works that she co-wrote with her partner Rebecca Benson.

“This song is about … aiming higher for each other, but also the admiration of, of loving the person so much that you think they’re the best thing ever,” said Derksen, who is half Cree, half Mennonite originally from North Tallcree reserve on Treaty 8 territory in Alberta.”
