Public Notes

BMUS PIAN students register in MUSC 161A.

For 2nd year undergraduates (see MUSC 361A for 3rd and 4th year registration).

Small ensemble combinations will be formed in September, and regular coaching times will then be assigned during the indicated hours. Each ensemble should also schedule regular rehearal time(s) during these hours. Students registered in MUSC 161A who also wish to register in MUSC 157 (Early Music Ensembles) or MUSC 163 (Contemporary Players) may do so, but will need to contact the Music Advisor (music.advisor@ubc.ca) for a registration override. Students needing additional chamber ensemble credit may be able to register for additional credit in September, pending approval from the Division.

BMUS General Music students with a concentration in Piano may apply to enroll in MUSC 161A upon completion of MUSC 167 with a minimum grade of 88. Approval from the instructor of MUSC 167 and permission from solo piano instructor are also required. Final permission to enroll is not guaranteed, and will be given by the Chamber Music Coordinator (in consultation with the Director, as needed). Requests for admission should be sent to Professor Rena Sharon (rena.sharon(at)ubc.ca). General Music piano concentrators allowed to register in MUSC 161A will normally be permitted to take it only once, for 2 credits. They may apply to take MUSC 161A a second time if they have obtained a minimum grade of 88 in the course.

Public Notes

This Performance-based Chamber Music course comprises coachings and Group Performance Class in Collaborative Interpretation and Performance Practices in String/Piano Sonatas, Trios, Quartets, and Quintets Repertoire. Through interactive coachings, discussions, and in-class performances, students explore the complex analytical processes, interpersonal skills, artistic practices, and group decisions essential for dynamic interpretive collaboration and powerful co-created performance.

Alternating ensemble partners and repertoire are organized by the Class Coordinator. All students attend the weekly two-hour lecture, discussion and ensemble performance class (Tuesdays). As well, they attend alternating one-hour coaching sections (Mondays at 3 pm and/or Wednesdays at 1 pm) as organized by Coordinator. Ensembles will also schedule their own additional rehearsals within those time periods.

Students enrolled in this course should not schedule other activities during the Monday and Wednesday coaching hours.

Please note: Requests for specific collaborations with additional colleagues may be welcome in some circumstances.

This course is blended with MUSC 521D.

- 3rd and 4th year BMus PIAN and String Performance majors may enrol with approval of the course instructor and their instrumental teachers. For PIAN majors, completion of MUSC 167 and at least one year of 161A with 90% minimum grade is required.

- GMUS Piano 4th year students may contact instructor for permission to register, subject to completion of MUSC 167 and at least one year of 161A with minimum grade of 90, and approvals of course instructor and piano instructor.
