Recognized as one of the country’s top student ensembles, the UBC Symphony Orchestra will be performing live at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, under the baton of Jonathan Girard, Director of Orchestras, in a program that spans the Romantic era, from stormy seascapes to symphonic grandeur.
The concert opens with graduate assistant conductor Sarah Wong leading Felix Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture, Op. 26, a vivid tone poem inspired by the composer’s visit to Scotland’s rugged coast. Graduate assistant conductor Chengyu Zhang then takes the podium for Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, WWV 103, a tender orchestral love letter originally composed as a birthday gift for his wife, Cosima.
Maestro Jonathan Girard closes the program leading the full orchestra in Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C Major, “The Great” — a sweeping, large-scale work that stands as one of the composer’s most celebrated symphonic achievements.
