Remembering Donald Brown (1925-2017)

It is with sadness that the School of Music announces the passing of retired faculty member Donald Brown.

Donald taught at UBC for 30 years. He came to us here in Music in 1960 as a Sessional Lecturer in Voice in 1965. In 1977 he became and Assistant Professor, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. He taught voice — including Music 441 and Vocal Techniques, among many other courses — performed, and served on committees within the Voice Division.

Don’s extensive performance history spanned cantatas and other large choral works, opera, musical theatre, light opera, vocal recitals and CBC broadcasts as a tenor and baritone (he mostly known as a lyric baritone). He also conducted various church/choral groups and adjudicated at festivals across Canada.

In his retirement, Don regularly attended concerts and continued to be involved in music in many ways.

A celebration of Donald Brown’s life will be held on Friday, Nov. 10th at 2 p.m. at Dunbar Ryerson United Church. You can read the Vancouver Sun obituary here.
