About
Ingrid Chiang is a celebrated bassoonist and educator based in Vancouver, Canada. For the past 25 years, she has served as the Principal Bassoonist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and for 18 seasons, she has been a core artist with the Turning Point Ensemble, where she brings her artistry to both classical repertoire and contemporary premieres.
Originally from Taiwan, Ingrid moved to Vancouver at the age of 15, continuing a musical journey that began with piano at age five and bassoon at age twelve. She studied with Jesse Read at the University of British Columbia and Christopher Millard at the Vancouver Academy of Music, cultivating a foundation of both technical mastery and interpretive depth.
Ingrid’s performances have been featured with leading ensembles including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony, and the Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra, along with numerous chamber and contemporary music festivals. A past national winner of the CBC Radio Competition, she was also featured in the Young Concert Artists Series, highlighting her exceptional skill and expressive voice as a soloist.
A dedicated teacher and mentor, Ingrid has been on faculty at the University of British Columbia for 12 years, where she is known for her compassionate, insightful approach to teaching. Her students describe her as both rigorous and encouraging, fostering growth through musical integrity and personal connection.
Offstage, Ingrid is a breast cancer survivor, and her recovery journey has deepened her advocacy for wellness and resilience in the performing arts. She integrates movement, mindfulness, and joy into her artistry and mentorship, championing a holistic path for musicians at every stage.
Whether performing Mozart in the pit, premiering a new Canadian work, or guiding a student toward their own musical voice, Ingrid Chiang brings a rare blend of passion, warmth, and authenticity to everything she does.
