Iconic concertos performed by UBC's best and brightest pianists

On Sep. 23rd, 2018, join us for an evening of Mozart and Beethoven as some of UBC's best young pianists perform with UBC Symphony Orchestra at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. The winners of the inaugural Robert and Ellen Silverman Piano Competition will play selections from four different, iconic concertos. Meet the Soloists

Benjamin Hopkins (Grand Prize Winner)

A native of Rochester, NY, Benjamin Hopkins is a third year DMA student of Dr. Corey Hamm. Last month he made his European recital debut as a fellow at the Gijon International Piano Festival. In 2017 he appeared with the UBCSO as winner of the school’s concerto competition and took third prize in the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Auditions (USA). An alumnus of the USC Thornton School of Music, he was twice named the school’s Outstanding Graduate and was honoured for his work as a teaching assistant. He has previously studied with Lucinda Carver, Brian Preston, Julian Martin, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. 

Ben will perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major Op. 58

Evgenia Rabinovich (2nd Prize Winner)

Evgenia Rabinovich is a Vancouver-based pianist, teacher, and performer. Until 2011, Evgenia studied privately with Dr. Sasha Starcevich before receiving her Bachelor’s degree from the Mannes School of Music in NY in 2015 under the tutelage of Professor Pavlina Dokovska. As a student of Miranda Wong, she received her Master’s degree from the UBC in 2017, and is currently a DMA student studying with Mark Anderson. 

In 2010, she was awarded First Prize in the National Canadian Music Competition. Since then, she has performed in the United States, Canada, Europe, and China.  Evgenia teaches piano and theory privately in Vancouver and is a Graduate Teaching Instructor at the UBC.

Evgenia will perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15, iii. Rondo; Allegro Scherzando.


Ayunia Saputro (3rd Prize Winner)

Born in October 1998, Ayunia Indri Saputro is a young pianist from Indonesia. She started learning piano with Anna Sulastri at 5 years old, and studied with Rosalinawati Iman & Dr. Johannes Sebastian Nugroho in Surabaya. Ayunia received the highest score in Indonesia for ABRSM and LCM Diploma Examination in 2015 and 2016, and received the first prize in the ASA International Competition, which led to her performance at the residence of Indonesia’s third President in 2016. Ayunia is currently in her third year of piano performance studies at UBC and studies with Mark Anderson.

Aydan Con (4th Prize Winner)

Aydan Con is a dual Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Music degree student and has been a winner of many music competitions and scholarships. Aydan has studied with Bruce Vogt, Lorraine Ambrose, May Lim and Rebecca Kelly and has also participated in masterclasses with Jon Kimura Parker, Murray Perahia and Dina Yoffe. He currently studies solo and collaborative piano performance with Mark Anderson and Rena Sharon, respectively.  A dedicated teacher, Aydan has taught at the Vancouver Academy of Music and Saint James Music Academy, preparing students RCM examinations, competitions and for a life-long enjoyment of music.  

Aydan will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto in A Major, K. 488, ii. Romanze; Adagio.
