UBC student and alum recognized at Society for Ethnomusicology’s 70th Annual Meeting



This weekend at the Society for Ethnomusicology 70th Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA, two UBC students were recognised for their outstanding work in the field of ethnomusicology.

Current PhD Candidate in Ethnomusicology Oscar Smith received an Honourable Mention for his composition “SANGA-sia” (2024), composed during his fieldwork in Bali, Indonesia. The Robert M. Stevenson prize recognises ethnomusicologists who are also composers. Listen to the composition below.

UBC Alum Dr. Juan Diego Díaz (PhD’14) won the Helen Roberts Prize for Most Significant Article Publish in the Field of Ethnomusicology. Díaz won this for his paper titled “From Clave Ethnotheory to Clave Theories: A Path Toward Decolonising Music Analysis”, published in Ethnomusicology 68 (2). Dr. Díaz is currently Associate Professor of ethnomusicology at the University of California, Davis.

Both Smith and Díaz are/were supervised by UBC Professor of Music, Dr. Michael Tenzer.
