Sessional Lecturer, Organ
B.Mus. (W.Wash.), Dip. (Roy.Conserv.)
Michael Murray is one of Western Canada’s most exciting and engaging organists. Equally at home in early and modern repertoire 2012 will see him perform nine world premieres of music for solo organ, and release a CD of Bach’s works for flute and keyboard with Vancouver-based Mark Takeshi McGregor. Michael also works with a variety of choirs. Most recently he has collaborated with EnChor in a dissertation concert for conductor Kevin Zakresky, Pacifica Singers with John William Trotter, and the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir with Jonathan Quick.
A choral director and singer himself, Michael founded the twice Juno-nominated vocal ensemble musica intima which celebrates their 20th anniversary season this year. His most recent endeavour as both artistic director and performer is the launch of a new concert series at St. Philip’s Anglican Church (Dunbar).
Michael is currently the director of music at St. Philip’s Anglican Church, and is the organ instructor at the University of British Columbia. He studied music at Douglas College in New Westminster, obtained his Bachelor of Music in organ performance from Western Washington University, and received his Associateship diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
