Wins at the OSM Manulife Competition 

Congratulations to pianist and UBC Music alum Carter Johnson (BMus'18) who won the Grand Prize at the OSM Manulife Competition! Carter was awarded a $10,000 scholarship, and will perform with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal on January 16, 2019. Carter also received the Schulich School of Music Prize, consisting of a scholarship for studies in Music Performance at McGill University.

Pianist Nicole Linaksita (BSc/BMus’16) also won a prize at the OSM Manulife Competition — she was awarded the Orford Music Prize which includes a scholarship covering accommodation and tuition for an advanced program at Orford Music in 2019.

Congratulations to Carter and Nicole!

Joshua Redman: Still Dreaming
“A supremely affable and flowing improviser,” (The New York Times) Joshua Redman is one of the finest jazz saxophonists of our time, just as his father Dewey was of his. For Still Dreaming, Joshua Redman is joined by Ron Miles on trumpet, Scott Colley on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. Together, they speak across generations through new compositions inspired by Dewey’s legacy.

War-Related Trauma Stress Injuries: Lessons Learned Across Time

Running alongside the Silent Night opera is a wide-ranging, multidisciplinary symposium organized in conjunction with the Faculty of Education and the Veterans Transition Program. UBC Music alumna and faculty member Jocelyn Morlock(MMus'96, DMA'02) won the Jan V. Matejcek New Classical Music Award. The award for the top composer in contemporary-classical music was handed out on June 18 as part of the 2018 SOCAN Awards. Read article

Recent alumnus Carter Johnson(BMus’18) won the Grand Prize in the 2018 Canimex Canadian Music Stepping Stone Competition. The Grand Prize consists of a $10,000 scholarship. Carter also tied for Best Performance of a Canadian Work ($1,000) with fellow contestant Samuel Blanchette-Gagnon. Carter also competed in the2018 New York International Piano Competition, where he tied for second prize in the One-Piano, Four Hands Ensemble category, performing with Boris Slutsky. Each ensemble received a cash award of $2,500 to be divided between the winning teams. Carter was recently featured as one of CBC Music's"30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30." Read article

Nicole Linaksita
Pianist and UBC Music alumna Nicole Linaksita(BSc/BMus’16) has recently won a multitude of prizes for outstanding performances at several competitions. At the BC Provincial Music Festival, she won the Tom Cuff Award for Best Performance of a Canadian Work in the Canadian Piano Classes, performing "Five" by Dr. Dorothy Chang. Nicole also won the Linda Stobbe Memorial Award as the winner of the National Piano Class, as well as the Marilyn Wiwcharuk Memorial Scholarship for the Outstanding Performance in the National Concert on June 2nd, as chosen by the adjudicators. Nicole will move on to represent British Columbia in the piano class at the National Music Festival in Sackville, New Brunswick in August.

In addition to Nicole's recent Sixth Place win at the prestigious Shean Piano Competition, she also won First Prize in the Senior Category at the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra’s Clef Concerto Competitionand will be playing with the VMO next season. Most recently, Nicole won the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra 2018 Concerto Competitionin the 24 Years and Under Division. She will perform as a concerto soloist for the VAM Symphony concert on October 7th, 2018 in the Orpheum Theatre.Nicole is a student of Dr. Corey Hamm.

A graduate of Wheaton College and Northwestern University, Dr. Whitney regularly appears with some of the nation’s most esteemed performing organizations, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Lyric Opera, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Read more

Fifty for the Future is a string quartet commissioning, performance, and education project launched by the Kronos Quartet. Kronos is commissioning a library of fifty works designed to guide young amateur and early-career professional string quartets in developing and honing the skills required for the performance of 21st-century repertoire, including works by Canadian composers Tanya Tagaq and Nicole Lizée.
