The Jean Coulthard Readings
Named in honour of one of BC’s most beloved composers, the Jean Coulthard Readings give emerging BC composers an invaluable opportunity to have their work read by a professional orchestra. This year, six orchestral works have been selected. Participating composers have received a part preparation seminar with VSO Music Librarians, and will take part in a follow-up masterclass with the Vancouver Symphony’s Composer-in-Residence Jocelyn Morlock.

Vancouver Cantata Singers
A Nordic journey exploring choral music from Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway, featuring works by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, Mia Makaroff, Gisli Magnason, Per Nørgård, and a premiere performance of Metsä by Vancouver composer Alan Matheson, set to Riina Tamm’s beautiful poem Woods.

New Albums

Flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor (BMus'95, DMA'12) released his album, Lutalica (Redshift Records), on April 26, 2019. The album was engineered, edited and mastered by Don Harder (BMus’78) and features the composition Wrenegade by Nova Pon (MMus’15, DMA student). "Lutalica" is described as "The part of one’s identity that doesn’t fit into categories" (n., Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows).

Thomas Beckman viola (MMus'16) released and produced an album entitled Life in the Universe (Redshift Records), which was created to accompany a 25 minute video assembled by the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. The video examines the various parts of the known universe likely to harbour life, as well as the elements necessary for the origination of life. The main motif ‘A-A-C’ serves as a cryptogram for the element H20 (H-O-O), one of the most vital ingredients for organic life."
