Meet our newest faculty member!

UBC School of Music is pleased to announce that Dr. Valerie Whitney will join the faculty as Assistant Professor of Horn, starting in the 2018–19 academic year. A graduate of Wheaton College and Northwestern University, Dr. Whitney regularly appears with some of the nation’s most esteemed performing organizations, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Lyric Opera, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Read more


Pianist Bogdan Dulu (DMA’15) had his debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on June 1, 2018, performing the world première of Bramwell Tovey’s Shalimar Variations for Piano & Orchestra. A sold-out repeat performance took place June 4 at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver.

Composer Roydon Tse (BMus'13) was awarded a 2018 Emerging Artist Award by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation. Emerging Artist awards support and encourage Alberta’s most promising artists at an early stage of their careers. Each Emerging Artist Award recipient receives a medal and $10,000, presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta at Government House in Edmonton. More info

Congratulations to our students and recent alumni who won spots in the National Youth Orchestra of Canada: Eva Toncheva violin (BMus’18), Madelynn Erickson violinNina Weber violaEmily Richardson fluteCarlos Savall-Guardiola clarinet, and Lukas Hildebrandt percussion (BMus’18). This summer, the NYO will go on their largest ever Canada-European tour. They begin with a journey across Eastern Canada, and then cross the sea to Germany and Edinburgh, where they will perform at three prestigious, invitation-only international festivals. The tour runs July 24 to August 14, 2018. More info

In 1904, Puccini first began planning what would become his famous collection of one-act operas: Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi.
