Beethoven’s ground—and finger-breaking—set of variations on a simple, yet infallibly stirring tune used in both his ballet The Creatures of Prometheus and the even more radical Eroica Symphony explores both keyboard virtuosity and a novel, bold way of creating characterization through texture and sonority. In contrast, Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze is a subtle and highly subjective, prismatic transformation of a fragment of music by Clara Schumann, both hidden and omnipresent in every corner of this intensely Romantic creation.
