July 2018 marks the inaugural UBC Chamber Orchestra Festival, an exciting opportunity for musicians who are participating in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute at Whistler (VSOIW) to continue their orchestral experience in Vancouver on UBC's stunning campus. 

The VSOIW will culminate in a performance at the Chan Centre on July 3. For the five days following, participants in the Chamber Orchestra Festival will comprise an elite ensemble, performing masterworks of the chamber orchestra repertoire.

Selected conducting fellows will work with the orchestra and Maestro Jonathan Girard in a rich collaboration.  Students who have been selected as ranked winners in the VSOIW concerto competition will also have an opportunity to perform movements of their concerto with selected conducting fellows.
 

UBC Chamber Orchestra Festival Repertoire will include:

Prokofiev - Classical Symphony
Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92
and standard concerto repertoire

Performances

There will be two performances. The conducting fellows will lead the orchestra in the Saturday, July 7 Concerto Concert and Maestro Jonathan Girard will conduct the orchestra on Sunday, July 8.
 

Conducting & Orchestral Faculty

Jonathan Girard will serve as Artistic Director for this festival, lead and coach all orchestra rehearsals, and work with conducting fellows.  Orchestral faculty will comprise members of the UBC School of Music Faculty and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.  Faculty will present masterclasses and sectional coachings for musicians.  Private lessons will be available for an additional fee.
 

Conducting Fellows

Conducting fellows will have a performance opportunity with the chamber orchestra on Saturday, July 7 and will be teamed with student soloists.  No more than five fellows will be selected, and all will receive instruction in masterclass format including ample podium time in rehearsal as well a performance with the orchestra. Conducting fellows are also encouraged to submit recordings on their orchestral instruments for participation as instrumentalists in VSOIW and in the UBC Chamber Orchestra Festival.  Conducting fellows should be in a pre-professional career stage. Students who are accepted as conducting fellows will have the opportunity to audit the VSOIW.  Details will be provided to accepted students.
 

Auditors

Conductors who are not selected as fellows are encouraged the UBC Chamber Orchestra Festival as auditors.  Auditors can observe all rehearsals, sectionals, coachings, and masterclasses and will work with Maestro Girard in group conducting masterclasses.
 

Tuition and Fees

Tuition for Orchestra Members:  $400 CAD ($315 USD)
Tuition for Conducting Auditors: $400 CAD ($315 USD)
Tuition for Conducting Fellows: $2000 CAD ($1570 USD)
Housing Fee: $350 CAD ($275 USD) (for those requiring housing from the evening of July 3–evening of July 7 with a July 8 check out)

 

Conducting Fellow application requirements

The following materials will be required from conducting applicants after the VSOIW application deadline.  Submission instructions will be emailed to applicants directly. 

  • A curriculum vitae
  • A list of repertoire studied and conducting in performance
  • All conducting applicants that wish to be considered for a fellowship must submit a online link to a conducting recording video recording(s) by the application deadline.  The conductor should be in full frontal or partial profile view; at least part of the ensemble should also be in view.  Repertoire should be appropriate to the musical and technical level of the ensemble.  Applicants should include both rehearsal and performance footage of contrasting repertoire and the footage should be no more than 20 minutes in duration.
  • Those who wish to participate as instrumentalists in the chamber orchestra (strongly suggested) and/or VSOIW must submit recordings as part of the VSOIW application.
