Pre-show talk by UBC Music faculty member Dr. Hedy Law
"The Invisible Hand: Staging Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice in 2017"
Thurs-Sat 6:45 pm–7:15 pm, Old Auditorium
Abstract:
“My talk places Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice in the context of eighteenth-century reform opera and the intellectual context of the Enlightenment. I explain how Adam Smith’s concept of the “invisible hand” helps us understand the dynamic between the visible and the invisible in this production and, conversely, how the invisible force foregrounded in this production helps us reflect upon issues of surveillance and human agency these days. I conclude by offering some thoughts about staging an unconventional production at a university and the meaning of experiential learning.”
